Becoming a Member

Full members are automobile manufacturers engaged in the sale of motor vehicles in the U.S. market. Eligible companies include those:

  1. under an agreement with the manufacturer, import new motor vehicles into or distribute new motor vehicles in, or manufactures new motor vehicles for export into the United States,
  2. which are part of a control group which includes the manufacturer and the importer or distributor of such vehicles, and
  3. whose control group has interests consistent with and not in conflict with the purposes of the Association as set forth in Article II (to be determined by the Board of Directors in its absolute discretion).

Associate Members are automobile manufacturers which sell fewer than 5,000 vehicles per year in the United States or any entity whose interests are:

  1. related to the manufacturer and export, or import, of new motor vehicles to the United States; and
  2. consistent with and not in conflict with the purposes of the Association, may be eligible to become an Associate Member of the Association.

Each prospective Member must apply in writing and must be approved by a two-thirds majority of the authorized votes of the Board of Directors. Each prospective Associate Member must apply in writing and be approved by a majority of the authorized votes of the Board of Directors, or by a two-thirds majority of the authorized votes of the Executive Committee.

Information required for AIAM membership applications:

  • Identity of the applicant;
  • The nature of the business of the applicant, e.g., vehicle or parts manufacturer/exporter, importer or trade association;
  • Trade names or trademarks of the vehicles or parts of the applicant;
  • A description of the vehicles or parts, e.g., light duty truck, passenger automobile, or tires;
  • The date on which the applicant's vehicles or original equipment parts were first imported or will be imported for sale in the United States;
  • If the applicant is a corporation whose shares are publicly traded, identification of any person or entity owning a controlling interest; if the applicant is not a corporation whose shares are publicly traded, the identification of the principal shareholders, if a corporation, or the principal partners, if a partnership, of the applicant;
  • If an importer (or prospective importer), a description of the importer's form of business, (e.g., corporation, partnership, etc.) and a description of the relationship of the importer to the manufacturer of the vehicles parts;
  • A statement of the applicant's interest in joining the Association and that the applicant understands that it must abide by the Bylaws of the Association and such other rules of procedure or conduct as the Board may from time to time establish;
  • A statement that the applicant understands it must promptly pay all assessments as may be properly charged pursuant to the Bylaws; and
  • Any other information which the applicant believes would be helpful in assisting the Board in its consideration of the application for membership.
